Overview

Any A Level subjects can be combined. A Levels can also be studied alongside a BTEC Level 3 Certificate.

You will study an AS Level in the first year of this course.

You will study one religion in academic depth and a range of philosophical and ethical issues. As well as providing knowledge, all topics aim to develop your analytical and evaluative skills, with the aim of preparing you for a degree at university level.

This course is ideal if you enjoy academic debate and having your thinking seriously challenged and your vision of the world widened.

The course is both challenging and rewarding. The final A Level qualification will be achieved by completing three 2 hour written examinations. However, all learners are given the opportunity to gain an AS at the end of the first year, which is comprised of three 1 hour 30 minute examinations.

What topics will I study?

You will gain an introduction to three main areas:

  • Buddhism
  • The Philosophy of Religion
  • Ethical Studies

You will:

  • Explore the beliefs and practices of Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. Examine the role of Buddhism in the 21st century, such as whether it aligns with feminism and science
  • Examine arguments for and against the existence of the Abrahamic God
  • Explore the nature of ethical theories such as egoism and virtue ethics
  • Improve your verbal and written skills whilst gaining confidence in public speaking
  • Be expected to read widely and regularly on and around the subject and verbally participate in all aspects of the lessons
