Overview

This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Make-up Artistry aims to provide you with a range of essential technical practical skills and knowledge.This practical based training is ideal preparation for gaining employment or further specialist training within the make-up industry.

Your programme will cover all of the work specific core skills and knowledge you will need to carry out services such as applying make-up and creative make-up / hair artistry. You will explore and research the historical and global influences on make-up and produce a portfolio to showcase your different technical skills and final looks.

Practical skills in make-up and hair artistry will be developed on fellow students; once a level of competence is reached, you will then be able to work on clients in our well-equipped make-up room and hairdressing salons. Whilst studying you will have the opportunity to engage in enrichment activities and workshops. These may include development of employability skills, employer involvement activities, team work and promotional events, communications and customer service; all of which are important when you are thinking about working in the make-up industry.

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:

One externally set, internally marked and externally moderated assignment (Practical based). In this synoptic assignment you will design and create a themed look using all of the skills, techniques, concepts and theories from across the programme area.

One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions (Theoretical based). This exam is designed to assess the depth and breadth of knowledge across the qualification, using a range of question types.

This qualification is graded: Pass / Merit / Distinction / Distinction*

What topics will I study? 

This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the make-up industry. You will study the following mandatory units:

  • Principles of working in the make-up industry
  • Anatomy and Physiology for make-up artists
  • Research, develop and showcase make-up and hair artistry designs
  • The art of applying make-up
  • Hair artistry
  • Creative make-up artistry

You will:

  • Discover the art of applying make-up
  • Develop skills in hair artistry and creative make-up artistry
  • Research, develop and showcase make-up and hair artistry designs
  • Learn about anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
  • Study the principles of working in the make-up industry

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

Next steps: 

You could progress on to the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-Up Artistry.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry requirements: Grade 4 in English Language and grade 3 in Maths Plus two GCSEs at grade 3 or above, or equivalent (Level 1 Diploma in Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector).

Subject specific entry requirement or recommendations: GCSE grade 4 or above in Art.

Facilities

There is a fully equipped media make-up room, four hairdressing salons, five beauty clinics, providing you with a professional working environment.You will have access to learning resource centres and there is a refectory in the Hele building.Personal lockers are available for use when you are at college and learners have changing room facilities.

Additional Costs

You will be required to purchase a personal kit and uniform.

There are options to attend enrichment workshops and educational visits at an additional cost.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
