This course blends theory and practice to prepare you for a profession that is much in demand. Practical, theoretical and verbal skills with clients will be assessed, along with your portfolio of evidence. You will also be assessed on your written assignments.

Overview

This course blends theory and practice to prepare you for a profession that is much in demand. As part of your Level 1 programme you will study Functional Skills in English and Maths and a programme of Personal Social Development.

There are practical and theoretical classes which will help each student develop a portfolio of evidence for verification. There is some case study/project work. Practical skills are developed on fellow students – once a level of competence is reached clients are to be used for assessment. You will be assessed practically, theoretically and orally in all areas. Testimonials may be required as evidence in some areas. Complete portfolios are verified and should include assessment books, case studies, projects, and theoretical papers. Some units have external online test papers. Balance of course 40% theory/60% practical.

  • Attend industry exhibitions
  • Work in our welcoming centre with professional hairdressing salons, beauty salons and spa

  • Enhance your transferable skills in English, Maths and Personal Social Development

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

Next steps: 

On successful completion of the course you can progress to Level 2 or seek an Apprenticeship in hairdressing.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry requirements: Grade 2 in English Language and Maths. If you don’t have a grade 4 in English and Maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course. Plus, you will need two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, or equivalent.

Facilities

We have fantastic commercial hair salons, beauty clinics, theatrical make-up studios and Spa. You will have the opportunity to train in the faculties brand new showcase salon Zeal @ Exeter College all at the Laurence Building on our Hele Road site. All our students experience a busy commercial environment, H2B professional treatments are available to visitors from all over the south west. Learning resource centres also provide students with access to the internet as well as specialist information to support them during their studies.

Additional Costs

You will need to purchase a personal kit and uniform. You are responsible for providing your own working resources.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
