Overview

This vocational programme will provide you with a superb foundation for a career in the hospitality industry and applicants will require no prior knowledge of hospitality. The course will give you all the foundation knowledge in theory and practical to allow you to progress onto Level 2 NVQ.

This course is ideal if you would like to gain more confidence in your abilities of food handling, customer service and help develop a professional aptitude within the hospitality industry.

The programme will include working as part of a team in practical kitchen work, serving food in the public restaurant and integrated theory sessions. As with all NVQ programmes, assessment will be continuous within the realistic working environment.

What topics will I study?

You will learn about the hospitality industry and practise skills in food and drink service and food preparation and cookery. You will also study a Personal Social Development programme and Functional Skills in Maths and English that underpin your qualification.

You will:

  • Gain valuable, hands on experience in a real working environment
  • Practice skills in food preparation and cookery
  • Practice skills in food and drink service
  • Work as part of a team in our fully equipped @thirty-four kitchens and restaurant
  • Learn about employment in the hospitality industry
  • Develop transferable skills through studying a Personal Social Development programme as well as Maths and English

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

Next steps:

You could progress to a full time NVQ Level 2 or a Diploma in Professional Cookery to gain further skills and knowledge, or seek work in the industry whilst continuing your studies on an Apprenticeship scheme.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry requirements: Grade 2 in English Language and Maths. If you don’t have a grade 4 in English and Maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course. Plus, you will need two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, or equivalent.

Subject specific entry requirements or recommendations: You must be keen and interested in hospitality and catering.

Facilities

The Laurence Building boasts state-of-the-art facilities which include commercial modern kitchens, a stunning restaurant and an ICT suite. The faculty is located in comfortable and pleasant surroundings.

Additional Costs

Additional costs include uniform and equipment costing approx £235.00.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
