What kinds of support are available?
Learning Support Services
All students at Exeter College are supported on their learning programmes by relevant lecturers/instructors or tutors, depending on the nature of their need. You will also be able to access our helpful Study and Writing Skills or
Maths Skills workshops. If you have a specialist support need, you will also get help from our dedicated Learning Support team,
unless you are already receiving support via, for example, the West of England College for Young People with Little or No Sight or the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education. Students on Higher Education courses receive support through their application for Disabled Students Allowance.
- Do you have (or suspect you might have) a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyscalculia?
- Do you have ADD/ADHD?
- Do you have an autistic disorder such as Asperger’s syndrome?

Tutoring and Welfare
We understand that the move from school to college can be an exciting but sometimes
daunting prospect for all young people.
It counts as one of the big transition times in a young person's life.
The Tutoring and Welfare support at Exeter College is key to supporting young
people at this time. If you are on a full-time course you will have a personal tutor, usually
someone who also teaches you. They will provide help and support while you study
at the college.
Your tutor will:
- Give personal advice and support
- Give you progress reviews
- Help you with Key Skills
- Help you with Study skills
- Check on attendance
- Keep parents informed
- Encourage extra activities

During term time, Exeter College has a Medical Room available to students where they
can go with any health concerns they may have. The facility is covered by our two nurses
and
is open daily from 9.00am to 4.30pm.
Telephone: 01392 205445
The nurses are happy to support tutors with health, education sessions for students
and also liaise with GPs or other health professionals on a students behalf.
Student Counselling
The college has a team of counsellors who can provide confidential support
to students about anything which is bothering
them - college worries, home concerns, personal problems, relationship difficulties...
anything.
Students can contact a counsellor themselves, or via tutors, nurses or any member
of staff in the college.
The counsellors can be contacted on:
Telephone: (01392) 205449
Child Protection
Young people have a fundamental right to be protected from harm.
Families and carers have a right to expect Colleges to provide a safe and secure
environment.
All colleges have a legal duty to work with other agencies, for example Community
Services and the Police, to safeguard a young persons welfare.
Exeter College has a senior member of staff who is responsible for Child Protection
matters affecting students at the college ("the designated person"). It also has
a Child Protection Policy, which explains how the college deals
with child protection concerns. You can ask for a copy of this if you would like
to see it.
As part of its Child Protection Policy the college must follow:
- The Law
- Guidance from the Department for Education and Skills
- Local multi-agency child protection procedures
If the college is worried about a young person's welfare, they must refer this on
to the Community Services (Social Services).
The College will normally let the young person's parents/carers know when they do
this. However, they will not contact parents/carers
if they think that this could
put the young person at risk of harm.
When the college refers a Child Protection concern to a Community Worker, they must
share all relevant information about the student - The Data Protection Act allows
Colleges to share personal information with other agencies when there are Child
Protection concerns about a young person.
Within 24 hours of receiving a referral, the Community Worker, usually in consultation
with other agencies, will decide what should happen next.
More detailed information is available in our Child Protection and Exeter College
(Information for parents/carers and young people) leaflet.
