This section tells you about the range of courses you can do at Exeter College
that lead to professional qualifications for teachers and trainers in the
post-16 'learning and skills' sector. If you work in a college, in adult and
community education, for a private training provider or in work-based training
you will need to gain some level of qualification to teach..

Exeter College is the main provider of post-16 teacher education in the Exeter and
heart of Devon area. We have a strong reputation for high quality training and excellent
success rates.
The Skills for Life Professional Development section tells you about training courses for subject specialist teachers of literacy
and numeracy, and for those supporting learners with their language, literacy
and numeracy.

‘Energise’ units (CPD units) (SVUK quality marked programme)
These units provide creative approaches to the delivery and embedding of literacy and numeracy skills, helping your learners to feel more motivated. You can attend one unit only, or all 5 if you wish. You will leave with ideas to make the delivery of literacy and numeracy skills more relevant and fun.
These units can count towards your annual CPD. We expect that these combined units may also be available as an option on the Cert Ed/PGCE.

Preparing to Teach (City & Guilds 7303)
This is the essential first stage if you wish to teach in the Post-16, Learning
and Skills Sector. If you plan to do the 7304 Certificate or 7305 Diploma you can
proceed directly onto those courses once you have passed PTLLS. PTLLS is the ‘threshold’
qualification for teachers in the post compulsory (FE) sector.

Certificate in Teaching (City and Guilds 7304)
This level 3/4 course is for those who are Associate Teachers in further, adult
and work-based education and training. It is a one year programme.

Certificate in Education (Post-Compulsory Education) (University of Plymouth)
This level 5 course is for those who have a full teaching role in further, adult and work-based education and training. This course is studied over 2 years part-time, and requires a minimum of 75 hours per year subject teaching, and contributes to professional formation QTLS status.

Post-graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) – full-time
This is the University of Plymouth’s one year, full-time programme leading to Qualified
Teacher (Learning and Skills) status. It is particularly suitable for recent graduates.
Non-graduates with extensive experience of teaching post-16 will also be considered.
(As this is a full-time programme, it cannot be studied whilst you are in regular
employment in the learning and skills sector). a Degree in Education (BA Hons Education Studies) with the University of Plymouth.

New Assessment and Quality Assurance Qualifications (City and Guilds 6317)
(Replacing Assessor and Verifier Awards - City and Guilds 7317)
These new qualifications are for those that are in, or looking to gain entry to, roles in Assessment and Internal Quality Assurance of NVQs and some similar competence-based qualifications. The course programmes are flexible, starting with group induction sessions covering theory and practice, followed by individual or small group sessions to support candidates in producing evidence of competence.
Existing 7317 qualifications are still open for registration until the end of December 2010 with the last group inductions taking place in the College in September 2010. Please click here to see the 7317 course information sheet.
