Graduation in Exeter Cathedral

Welcome to the graduation section where you’ll find information about the graduation ceremony on Friday 21st October 2016.

  • Itinerary for the day

    Time Itinerary
    From 12noon- 1.45pm Students can arrive at the Rougemont Hotel on Queen Street to register, to the right of the main reception.

    Once yoy have registered, you may collect cap and gown from Wippell from the Derby room.

    Opportunity to have a professional photograph taken by Exesight photography in the Cavendish room at the Rougemont Hotel.
    2.00pm All students MUST congregate in the Devonshire room in the Rougemont Hotel to get organised for the procession through Queen Street to the Cathedral. Students will be lined up by course, alphabetically. Students must stay in order of the line as this is the order they will sit in at the Cathedral.
    From 2.00pm Guest seating is available in the Cathedral; guests have the option of taking their seats or watching the procession.
    From 2.30pm Procession beings, students will leave the Rougemont Hotel and start the walk up to the Cathedral. The route will start in Queen Street, passing through the High Street, going past the Guild Hall and turning left into Broadgate and Cathedral Yard.

    In the Cathedral students will find their programme with name card attached, on their seats. Students need to take their name card on to the stage and their name will be read out.

    Please note, we will be processing regardless of weather- please wear sensible footwear.
    2.50pm Everyone takes their seats in the Cathedral.

    All students and guests must be inside the Cathedral by 2.50pm
    3.00pm Ceremony Starts
    4.25pm Ceremony Ends
    4.30-5.30pm There will be a second opportunity to have photos taken by Exesight photography in the Cavendish room at the Rougemont Hotel.

    Return cap and gown to Wippell who will be based in the Rougemont Hotel in the Devonshire room. Gowns must be returned to the Rougemont no later than 5pm.

    Ordering your Cap and Gown

    J.Wippell & Company Limited are providing caps and gowns which you must wear to attend the ceremony. To book your cap and gown please click the following link, then, select Exeter College (and not the awarding body) agree the terms and conditions and follow the booking instructions.


  • What to wear

    Graduation ceremonies are a formal occasion so casual clothing is not considered appropriate. We suggest graduands and guests dress as if 'attending a wedding'. You will need to order and wear a cap and gown. (See above).

  • Photography

    Where and when can I have studio photographs taken?

    Professional photos will be taken by Exesight photography in the Cavendish Room at the Rougemont Hotel before and after the ceremony. You don’t have to book your photo slot in advance, but you should allow time if you wish to have a professional photograph.

    How much will they cost me?

    Every student who wishes to have a professional photograph will pay a standard price of £20 this includes a 9x6 image and access to a digital online gallery that’s free to download. You will pay after you have had your photographs taken and you will collect your password to your private online gallery and receive your voucher code to order your free 9x6 print.

    You can download all of your images but if you would like any additional photographs printed they will be at the following prices:

    • 6x4: £1
    • 7x5: £1.25
    • 8X6: £1.75
    • 8X10: £2.75
    • A4: £3

    When will I receive my photo?

    You will receive your chosen photo in the post after the event once you have selected which images you would like.
