Key Skills - Essential for All
Employers and Universities want young people with good skills in English, Maths
and IT. Improving these key skills will help to ensure you make a real success of
your course.
At Exeter College, all students learn to improve one or more of these skills, with
the aim of getting qualifications to Level 2 (GCSE level). You will start at a level
that suits you. During the first couple of weeks you’ll take a computer based assessment
which helps to decide which level and type of key skill learning are more likely
to help you succeed.
If you’re taking a course at Level 1 or 2, you will learn English (communication),
Maths (application of number) and IT through your vocational subjects. You will
also take a 'wider key skill' such as Working With Others or Improving Your Own
Learning And Performance. If you are
taking a Level 3 course, such as a BTEC National Diploma or AS levels, you will
improve your IT skills to at least Level 2, with assessment of your skills related
directly to your course. If you don’t already have a GCSE A to C grade in Maths
and English, you will have the opportunity to take a GCSE or other national qualification
in these subjects.
