International Baccalaurete

Did you know that Exeter College is the most experienced further education college in Devon for the International Baccalaureate and that we have been delivering this exiting qualification for 16 year?

Are you:

  • Interested in a range of subjects and don’t want to narrow down your options?
  • Keen on doing a course that prepares you for university and that encourages you to ask challenging questions?

Then the International Baccalaureate might be the right course for you.

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?

It’s a two year course which is recognised by British Universities and internationally as a route to higher education. It’s an accepted alternative to A levels that is well respected in Britain.

What will I do on the International Baccalaureate?

You will study six subjects, three of them at Higher (H) level and three at Standard level (S). You can choose from the list below, but the subjects do depend on the choices of students and timetable constraints. The timetable is comparable to that of four A levels. You must have one subject from groups 1-5

Group 1 Language
English (H and S)

Group 2 Second Language
French (H and S)
German (H and S)
Italian (for beginners)
Spanish (H and S and for beginners)

Group 3 Individuals and Society
History (H and S)
Geography (H and S)
Psychology (H and S)

Group 4 Experimental Sciences
Biology (H and S)
Ecosystems and Societies (S) this can be a group 3 subject.
Chemistry (H and S)
Physics (H and S)

Group 5 Mathematics
Mathematics (H and S)
Mathematical Studies (S)

Group 6 Arts and Electives
Art and Design (H and S)
Music (H and S)
Film Studies (H and S)
*or a second choice from Groups 2,3,and 4

You will also complete a Theory of Knowledge course and undertake research investigating a topic of special interest which you present in an extended essay. Students are also involved in exciting Creativity, Action and Community-based projects.

What qualifications do you need?

You need GCSE passes at grade C or above in a broad range of subjects including Maths and English. If you want to study a language, you need GCSE A grade for Higher and GCSE C grade for standard for that Language. You can study the language ‘for beginners’ without a GCSE in that language. You do need to have a good standard of written and spoken English.
