ADTLLS Numeracy: The Additional Diploma in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) in the Lifelong Learning (Level 4/5)
Level: Level 4      Part-time  Tuesday 9.15am-12.30pm
How long is the course/training? This is a one-year course involving 20 taught weeks, 3 hours per week.

What will I be doing on the course/training?

The course provides the specialist qualification for teachers of adult numeracy. Alongside the generic teaching diploma (Cert. Ed or PGCE), this contributes to professional formation (QTLS).

The course consists of two taught modules, which combine theory and practice. They are accredited through three separate Units to form the full ADTLLS Numeracy qualification, which amounts to 45 credits on the QCF:

  • Numeracy and the learners (level 4)
  • Numeracy learning and teaching (level 5)

Where do I study/train?

Taught sessions are held in Victoria House.

What are the entry requirements?

Specialism requirements:
  • personal numeracy skills at level 3 (e.g. A level)
  • confirmed teaching of groups of adult numeracy learners (6 or more adults working at more than one level of the curriculum) for a minimum of 75 hrs
  • a good understanding of the Skills for Life Strategy and a working knowledge of the national curriculum for basic skills

What can I do after this course/training?

This is a specialist teaching qualification for the post-16 sector, leading to QTLS. Progression may be possible to either degree or masters programmes in post-compulsory education.

What Functional skills will I do?

Literacy, numeracy and ICT are embedded within teacher education programmes (the Minimum Core).

What residential/work experience is there?

This is a practical course based around your practice in your teaching role.

You need to fill in a teacher education application form for this course. You will be interviewed by our teaching staff (either in a group or individually) since it's important that you understand the content and commitment to the course.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

Groups include people with a wide variety of experience and you will learn a lot from other students on the course. Assessment will be through tasks related to each module, and through your observed teaching practice. You will also be given advice on how to improve your skills by an experienced tutor, and subject mentor. To meet the requirements of the teaching module you will need a literacy teaching placement, with a group of six or more learners, for a minimum of 75 hours.

What facilities are there?

Victoria House includes the Teacher Education base for the College, with a set of well-resourced rooms, including an ICT suite. It houses the College’s professional library.

Reduced fee: £187.00

There is a distance supplement of £185.00 towards the cost of out of area observations.
