Driving Goods Vehicles Apprenticeship
Level: Level 2      Part-time 
How long is the course/training? This is a two-year course.

What will I be doing on the course/training?

This Apprenticeship programme is aimed at those within the transport sector of the motor industry who are interested in pursuing a career as an LGV driver or who wish to enhance their existing qualifications. As an Apprentice you will hold a full time job that can provide you access to an LGV and attend College on block release for the length of your course. You will work towards a framework of qualifications which make up the Apprenticeship. This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to build your career and progress to further training and education.

NVQ: Part of the Apprenticeship framework is the NVQ qualification. The NVQ shows your competence, knowledge, and understanding of business tasks and procedures, and proves you are able to carry out your job to the NVQ standards. You will cover the following units:

  • Monitor the loading of goods vehicles
  • Complete pre-driving preparations
  • Maintain the safety and security of the load itself
  • Maintain awareness of driving conditions
  • Operating the vehicle systems
  • Driving the vehicle on public roads
  • Driving the vehicle in restricted spaces

There are also optional units. You will also complete the Employment Rights and Responsibilities workbook to ensure you are aware of your legal status.

What are the entry requirements?

To enter this Apprenticeship programme you should be employed with access to an LGV. A clean driving license (3 points or less) will also be expected. You will need to have previous experience of working within a customer service environment, excellent problem solving and communication skills, a positive attitude and a good general education.

What can I do after this course/training?

Once you have completed your Apprenticeship you should be looking to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship if you want to become a Class C + CE LGV Driver.

What Functional skills will I do?

You will do Functional Skills in Application of Number and Communication. They are essential skills that all apprentices will potentially use within their job.

What residential/work experience is there?

You will need to be in employment to do this course.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

When on your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out assessments in a variety of styles: observing you; completing knowledge questions; setting practical tasks. They will also help you build your portfolio of evidence for your NVQ.

  • A state of the art automotive diagnostic laboratory with test simulators and rigs

  • Four specific automotive training classrooms

What will the course/training cost me?

Currently there are no training fees or employer contributions for Apprentices that are eligible for government funding.
