What will I be doing on the course/training?

As an Apprentice you will learn the range of service skills necessary in today's restaurants for food and drink. This includes customer care, a range of food service skills, and specialised training in drinks service, barista skills and processing payments. In addition you will learn about the importance of effective working relationships, health and safety and food hygiene.

NVQ: Part of the Apprenticeship framework is the NVQ qualification. The NVQ shows your competence, knowledge, and understanding of business tasks and procedures, and proves you are able to carry out your job to the NVQ standards. You will cover the following units:

  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment
  • Customer care skills
  • Create and maintain effective working relationships
  • Dealing with payment
  • Prepare and clear areas for table service
  • Provide a silver service
  • Provide a table drink service
  • Prepare and serve bottled wine
  • Provide a table service

You will also complete two Technical Certificates, Basic Food Hygiene and Basic Health and Safety as part of your course. You will also complete the Employment Rights and Responsibilities workbook to ensure you are aware of your legal status.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need four GCSEs grade D and above to include English Language and Maths.

What can I do after this course/training?

This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to build your career and progress to further training and education.

What Functional skills will I do?

You will do Functional Skills in Application of Number and Communication.

What residential/work experience is there?

You must be in employment to do this course.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

When on your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out assessments in a variety of styles: observing you; completing knowledge questions; setting practical tasks. They will also help you build your portfolio of evidence for your NVQ.

What will the course/training cost me?

Currently there are no training fees or employer contributions for Apprentices that are eligible for government funding.

Additional costs:

You will need to purchase a full set of kitchen knives and kitchen whites (uniform).
