Children's Care, Learning and Development Apprenticeship
Level: Level 2      Part-time 
How long is the course/training? This is a one-year course.

What will I be doing on the course/training?

The Apprenticeship in Children's Care, Learning and Development offers a practical approach and a solid platform for anyone wishing to work in the childcare sector. As an Apprentice you will need to be employed in a childcare setting for a minimum of 16 hours and attend college one day per week throughout the programme. You will work towards a framework of qualifications, which make up the Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship consists of: NVQ Level 2.

You will cover the following units:

  • Contribute to positive relationships
  • Prepare environments to meet children's needs
  • Support play and learning

You will also choose one optional unit in additon to the compulsory ones above; complete a Paediatric First Aid Qualification, a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate and training in Manual Handling, Health and Safety and Nutrition and Healthy Eating. Technical Certificate: This is the theory and underpinning knowledge you require within your job. The qualification is called the Level 2 Certificate in Children's Care Learning and Development. You will also complete the Employment Rights and Responsibilities workbook to ensure you are aware of your legal status as an employee.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE's in Maths and English at grade C or above would be an advantage. You will need good patience, understanding, good communication skills and a strong desire to work with children. You will also be required to complete a criminal records bureau check for your employer.

What can I do after this course/training?

This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to qualify as a childcare assistant in line with the National Minimum care standards and OFSTED requirements and progress to further training and education.

What Functional skills will I do?

You will do Functional Skills in Application of Number and Communication. If you have achieved GCSE grades A to C you may be exempt this part of the framework.

What residential/work experience is there?

You must be in employment within a childcare environment.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

On your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out assessments and help you build your portfolio of evidence for your NVQ.

What facilities are there?

You will have access to a learning resource centre. There is a refectory in the Hele Building.

What will the course/training cost me?

Currently there are no training fees or employer contributions for Apprentices that are eligible for government funding.

Additional costs:

You may incur some costs for example textbooks required for the course. However you may find your employer has suitable texts, or that you can borrow them from the college library.
