Plumbing Apprenticeship
Level: Level 2      Part-time 
How long is the course/training? The NVQ 2 lasts for 24 months. You can proceed on to the NVQ 3 which is a further 18 months.

What will I be doing on the course/training?

As an Apprentice you will hold a full time job and attend college one day per week throughout the programme. You will work towards a framework of qualifications which make up the Apprenticeship. This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to build your career and progress to further training and education. NVQ: Part of the Apprenticeship framework is the NVQ qualification. The NVQ shows your competence, knowledge, and understanding of business tasks and procedures, and proves you are able to carry out your job to the NVQ standards. You will also complete a Technical Certificate.

You will cover the following units:

  • Install and test the components of a system
  • Commission and decommission systems
  • Maintain the effective operation of systems
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Maintain effective working relationships
  • Contribute to quality development and improvement of products
  • Fabricate, install and check sheet lead weathering system components
  • Maintain sheet lead weathering systems

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English and preferably a C or above in Science. You will be assessed at interview. You will need a real interest in plumbing as a career and must successfully complete level 2 before you can progress onto level 3.

What can I do after this course/training?

You will be fully qualified as a plumber and tradesman on completion of this course. You may have the option to progress to higher training and education and other career opportunities may become available to you. You may also be eligible for CORGI registration.

What Functional skills will I do?

You will do Functional Skills in Application of Number, IT and Communication.

What residential/work experience is there?

You must be in employment to do this course.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

When on your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out assessments in a variety of styles: observing you; completing knowledge questions; setting practical tasks. They will also help you build your portfolio of evidence for your NVQ.

What will the course/training cost me?

Currently there are no training fees or employer contributions for Apprentices that are eligible for government funding.

Additional costs:

Your employer will usually supply personal protective equipment (PPE). You may decide to buy some tools and equipment, but you are not obliged to buy them for the course.
