Site Carpentry Apprenticeship

What will I be doing on the course/training?

In this Apprenticeship you will complete the CAA Level 2 Diploma - Site Carpentry Technical Certificate as well as the NVQ. You will start with an introduction to carpentry through a wide range of activities and gain practical skills and knowledge of basic woodworking joints, maintenance and use of hand tools, preparation and use of portable power tools. You will progress and cover subjects such as:

  • Carrying out first and second fixing operations
  • Erection of structural carcassing
  • Setting up and operating circular saws

You will demonstrate safe working practices and gain a more in-depth understanding of health and safety and construction technology and building methods.

After completing the level 2 training we recommend you progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship where you will complete the NVQ level 3 and level 3 Diploma. You will further develop your knowledge and skills, including erecting complex structural carcassing components and installing first and second fixings.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSEs at C or above are an advantage for a level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and Ds for a level 2 Apprenticeship, but these are not essential. You will need a real interest in carpentry and wood occupations as a career and must successfully complete level 2 before you can progress to level 3.

What can I do after this course/training?

We would highly recommend that you progress onto the NVQ3 Advanced Apprenticeship on completion of this course. You will be qualified to a basic level carpentry and joinery in your specific area of the industry so further career opportunities and training should be widely available to you.

What Functional skills will I do?

You will do Functional Skills in IT, Communication, and Application of Number.

What residential/work experience is there?

You must be in employment to do this course.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

When on your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out assessments in a variety of styles: observing you; completing knowledge questions; setting practical tasks.

  • Training bungalow and Trade specific classroom
  • Fully equipped wood machine shop
  • Learning resource centre and Refectory

What will the course/training cost me?

Currently there are no training fees or employer contributions for Apprentices that are eligible for government funding.

Additional costs:

You will need safety boots, overalls and recommended text books.
