How long is the course/training? This is a two-year course.

What will I be doing on the course/training?

This course is ideal for students who wish to study Art and Design predominently and who are commited to a career within this field. It is equivalent to three A levels and is universally recognised as an entry qualification for degree level study.

The course's principal aims are:

  • To enable you to develop advanced level knowledge and skills in the broad principles of Art and Design
  • To enable you to try a range of different Art and Design activities and disciplines eg. painting, drawing, graphics, photography, textiles, sculpture, 3D design, from which to identify the most appropriate specialism(s) for the second year of the course
  • To provide you with career and higher education advice and guidance
  • To enable you to build up a portfolio of work in your chosen specialism that will help you progress to further/higher education or employment

What are the entry requirements?

You need at least five GCSE C grades including English Language at C or above, and three GCSEs at grade D. You should have an interest in, and commitment to, art and design, and will be expected to present a portfolio of your own work at interview.

What can I do after this course/training?

The college has an excellent record of placing students onto the pre-degree Foundation course as well as directly onto degree-level courses in art and design specialisms. Alternatively you could look for work in a number of art and design related fields.

What Functional skills will I do?

You will study for a level 2 Functional Skills qualification in IT.

How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed?

Most of the work is practical and studio/workshop based. There may be whole class discussions and lectures on the more theoretical aspects of the course. Your lecturers will work closely with you and you will be encouraged, as the course progresses, to develop your own interests. You will produce 18 'units' of work during the course, which will be formatively assessed as they are produced; some are formally assessed at the end of the first year, and the rest at the end of the second. You will also mount a final exhibition of your best work.

What facilities are there?

The Art and Design Department has eighteen art studios, a Print workshop, a Ceramics workshop, a 3D workshop, Photographic darkrooms, Photoshop and PremierPro software on PCs.

What will the course/training cost me?

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).

Additional costs:

Some essential materials are provided by the college but you are likely to spend at least £50.00 per term on materials and equipment. You will be invited to take part in study visits to exhibitions; a typical day visit to London costs £25.00-£35.00. There may be the opportunity to participate in a residential visit abroad,
