Aim Higher with Access

If you want to kick-start your career by going to university (Higher Education), but you don’t have all the qualifications you need, than a one-year Access to Higher Education course may well be your best choice.

Exeter College has been running the nationally recognised Access to Higher Education programme since 1987. Since then, hundreds of students have successfully completed the course and progressed on to further study and into jobs. Degree study is still a major route into higher paid, fulfilling jobs – so don’t let a lack of qualifications or worries about the costs put you off.

The Access to HE Diploma is a very rewarding course, however, it is also very demanding. Students are expected to be motivated to learn in and out of the classroom, to manage their study time, to meet deadlines and to take responsibility for their own learning. If you feel that you might have difficulty in any of these areas we may be able to help you, please discuss this with the member of staff who interviews you. If you are offered a place on the course, please also discuss these issues with your tutor during Induction.

The Access programme is designed for any adult who wishes to gain entry to higher education and who:

  • lacks the formal entry qualifications, and/or
  • feels the need to develop confidence and regain practice in study methods.

If that’s you, then please read on . . .

While you are studying on the Access course you will:

  • develop your study skills, writing, numeracy and IT skills.
  • gain a firm foundation for all forms of continuing education.
  • experience a broad-based programme of study which can help you develop your own ideas, aims and potential.
  • enjoy a boost to your self-confidence.

There are no formal entry qualifications but you do need to have:

  • a high degree of motivation towards study
  • a commitment to the course
  • sufficient levels of literacy and numeracy
  • evidence of recent study is desirable (we can help you gain this).

The minimum age of entry to the course is 19 years, though most will be over 21. You will be taught as an adult group through a combination of lectures, work in small groups, practical exercises, group discussions, seminars and tutorials.

We take applications for 2010 from September 2009. The course is very popular and we have limited places. Please do not leave it until the summer to apply as you may miss out on a place.
