Exeter College Sports Academy
The Sports Academy is designed to provide an opportunity for talented and gifted
sports performers to focus on their chosen sport, in a supportive and specialist
environment, whilst gaining academic and vocational qualifications.
What is a Sports Academy Student?
Someone studying vocational or academic subjects and also receiving some kind of
additional sports coaching, that is not provided by normal College provision. This
additional coaching is received in many forms such as: specific sports coaching,
conditioning, nutritional advice, new training techniques, access to sports therapy,
injury advice and rehabilitation etc. As an Academy student you will sign a ‘Code
of Conduct’ at the start of the academic year that will act as a binding agreement
between yourself and the College. This is to reinforce your commitment to the course
and training, health & safety standards, and in turn the reputation of Exeter College
and the development potential of the Academy Programme.
Why?
Many gifted and enthusiastic post 16 students aspire for a future in sport, whether
that is playing in a semi or pro environment, or looking for a profession within
the sport they love. This scheme is designed with those aspirations in mind. It
gives the opportunity to achieve excellent academic or vocational qualifications
and incorporates comprehensive training and playing regime.
Selection onto the Sports Academy
Students must obtain the required entry criteria for a full time course at Exeter
College, apply for selection through competitive and independent sports trials and
be between the ages of 16 to 18 years. Therefore, potential academy students need
to be self-motivated and committed to their sport and studies, be strong club or
school performers, or have achieved representative honours. Applications to academic
or vocational courses are separate to that of the Sports Academy Programme. However,
when you meet with your tutor for your College interview, you will need to inform
them that you have also applied to the Sports Academy.

ACES
Advanced Conditioning for Elite
Students
Exeter Colleges Sports Academy has introduced a new scheme for Elite sports performers
called ACES. This scheme creates a unique environment to help Elite sports performers
gain specific conditioning for their respective sports to assist external sporting
exploits, while combining this with studying for academic or vocational qualifications.
It must be stressed that this scheme only caters for elite performers, so applicants
must be exceptional county performer or above. Also, if individuals sport specific
training times require accessing sessions outside College hours, these students
will be given flexible tutoring built in to their studies.
This year the scheme has recruited 4 golfers with excellent handicaps, a Great Britain
Baseball player, two English School representative Athletes (Javelin & 400m), two
female South West Elite training group Rugby Union Players, two County Badminton
players, a Great Britain U18 Volleyball player, a county hockey player and two county
cricketers.
Tennis Academy

for the 2007-2008 academic year, in partnership with Exeter University Tennis Centre
and supported by the Devon LTA.
With the support of Will McNally (Director of Tennis at Exeter University) and the
backing of the Devon LTA, the kudos and expertise of the people involved should
allow for excellent development and recruitment in the future.
AA weekly timetable has been devised in the same format as all the other Sports in
the Academy. Students receive a comprehensive training schedule at the Universities
fantastic facilities. In addition, as with all Academy students at the College,
they also gain basic Exercise, Fitness and Nutrition qualifications.
