Safeguarding

Exeter College holds the safety, health, well-being and welfare of its students as paramount. We believe that all young people and vulnerable adults have a right to protection from abuse, whatever their age, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual identity or gender. We have adopted the definition of Safeguarding used in the Children Act 1989 and the Children Act 2004 and the Department of Education guidance document: 'Working Together to Safeguard Children' (2010), which focuses on safeguarding and promoting children, young people and vulnerable adult's welfare and can be summarised as:

  • protecting young people and vulnerable adults from maltreatment
  • preventing impairment of young people and vulnerable adults’ health or development
  • ensuring that young people are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • undertaking this role so as to enable those young people to have optimum life chances and to enter adulthood successfully.

We are committed to a 'whole college approach' to Safeguarding and to this end we will ensure that all staff are trained in Safeguarding and Child Protection issues and are kept up to date with changes in legislation and practice. We will take all allegations and suspicions of abuse seriously and will respond to them promptly. We will also make information available on Safeguarding and Child Protection to parents and students.

The college provides a complete welfare and support service to students. This includes support for housing, financial support, medical and counselling support and career progression support. This can all impact on a students’ health, well-being and safety.
