Just for Parents
Starting College
We understand that moving from school to college can be an exciting but sometimes daunting
prospect for all young people.
It counts as one of the ‘big’ transition times in a young person’s life.
We also appreciate that parents and carers may be apprehensive at this time and may feel that they could lose touch with the day to day educational life of their child.
All parents and carers see this as a time to give their child the chance to be independent however there is a recognition that young people will still need considerable parental support.
We recognise that it is essential therefore to keep strong links between the college and parents and carers to ensure that the young people thrive and reach their full potential.
How do we ensure this happens?
Starting in September
- We give all students an induction period into their college life. This means that
they have a chance to re think their choices. They will have a taste of the subjects
they have chosen. They will learn what tutoring and welfare support services there
are within the college. They will take part in an assessment of their learning styles
and this will help teaching staff to respond to the student’s individual needs.
-
They will visit the Fresher’s Fair where all the enrichment activities in the college
will be available.
- They will work with their tutor group, building new relationships
that often last long after they move on to the next step in their life.
- We will
allocate each student a personal tutor, who will give one to one support throughout
their time in the college.
- Every student will have the opportunity to work with
their tutor and their tutor group to fulfil the Every Child Matters Outcomes.
These include:-
- Being Healthy
- Staying Safe
- Enjoying and Achieving
- Making a Positive contribution
- Achieving Economic wellbeing
- We will invite you to an initial parents' evening so that you can meet their tutor
and learn more about the programmes they are studying.
- We will send a copy of the Parents' Newsletter to you three times a year. The newsletter
contains information on what is happening in college with feedback from departments
on the students’ success.
How do we keep you informed?
- You will receive invitations to parents' evening where you can meet the subject staff
who teach your child.
- You will be informed if there are issues over attendance
or lack of completed work. Your child will have been given the name and number of
the student attendance monitor attached to their department. Students are encouraged
to ring in by 10am if they are unable to attend.
- You will have access to your
child’s personal tutor.
We will communicate and keep you fully informed.

We do value parental support for both the individual student and the college as a whole. Your views are very important and do affect the way in which we support the students' learning experience.
