The brand new Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre on the Exeter Canal Basin,
opened July 2013 provides a contemporary hub for outdoor activities for
young people and adults from Exeter and Devon and across the region.
Officially opened by the Earl of Wessex on July 22nd, the £5.6 million outdoor
education and training centre was built and paid for by Devon County Council and
is the biggest single sum to be allocated from the proceeds of the sale of
Exeter Airport. The new centre, built by Midas, is a major contribution to the
continued development and regeneration of the Exeter Canal Basin and replaces
the existing Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre that currently provided
training courses for more than 25,000 people a year.
The world class centre delivers a wide range of outdoor adventure courses and
activities including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, climbing, caving,
orienteering, archery, raft building, team building and first aid and, in a
pioneering partnership, is run by Exeter College on a day-to-day basis.
The centre offers an innovative approach to education, training and recreation
with provision that encompasses the individual needs of a wide range of users,
including those disengaged from education, those looking for a short term
recreational activity, students wanting to train for a future career in the
industry through to professionals undertaking training and development in
leadership and development.
