Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

What is an Apprenticeship?

A real job, with hands-on experience and a salary – alongside industry standard training and a qualification.

Apprenticeships are available for anyone over 16* who wants to kick-start a career that suits their skills and interests, facilitate a career change, or progress in their current role.

With apprenticeships across various sectors and levels, there is a programme at Exeter College for you.

What are Apprenticeships like?

Apprenticeships are great if you’re ready to enter the workforce and earn a salary but still want to gain a qualification. We have a 1000-strong employer network and will support you to secure employment.

Apprenticeships are made up of two parts:

  • 80% of your time will be spent working with your employer, putting your knowledge into practice. You’ll work alongside experienced staff and learn from your workplace mentor, who supports your career development. You’ll develop work-based skills and behaviours such as communication and teamwork.
  • 20% of your time is spent learning the knowledge needed to excel in your role. This includes training at Exeter College, through day release or in one-week blocks, but could also includes company e-learning, shadowing colleagues, and attending conferences.

You’ll earn a salary while you learn, making apprenticeships a great alternative to full-time education, which often has a price tag and can leave you with little real-life work experience.

What grades do I need for an Apprenticeship?

The qualifications and experience you’ll need depend on both the apprenticeship level and your employer. Foundation, level 2 and level 3 apprenticeships are perfect for school leavers or career changers with no relevant experience, while level 4 and 5 apprenticeships require you to either have worked in a similar role previously or completed a relevant Level 3 qualification.

If you haven’t yet achieved a GCSE grade C/4 (or equivalent) in Maths and English, our team can support you to gain these skills alongside your apprenticeship.

Not sure which level is right for you? Once you apply, we’ll help you find an employer and make sure you’re studying the right course.
