Travel Passes

Your local County Council and Exeter College run subsidised travel schemes to help you to get to college.

You are guaranteed help with travelling to Exeter College if you:

  • Are studying on a full-time course
  • Are aged 16-18 years old
  • Live more than 3 miles from Exeter College*

* You are considered to live outside of Exeter if you do not live in the Exeter City Council boundary.

How can I get help with travel?

You can apply for a subsidised travel pass from your County Council Education Department*. You should apply in May/June if you are applying to start at Exeter College in September. You can contact them direct or you should be able to get an application form from your school.

The County Council will assess your application and they will send you a letter telling you of their decision. If you receive a letter of refusal from the Council do not worry - Exeter College runs a similar subsidised travel scheme and will be able to help you (but you must have applied to the County Council first).

*If you live in Dorset, Cornwall or Somerset, you should contact the Exeter College Travel Scheme Administrator direct. If you live in Torbay, you should apply to Torbay Council.

What travel passes are available and how much do they cost?

Both the County Council and college schemes operate using public transport. You will be supplied with a bus or train pass (or both if necessary) to allow you to get to college for 9am and return home at the end of the college day.

Exeter College also runs a dedicated private transport service for students travelling from Holsworthy, Great Torrington and South Molton school areas at the same cost as the other schemes.

The scheme is reviewed each year. For students starting college in September 2012, the contribution for a travel pass will be £500. You can either pay the full amount in one payment and receive a £30 reduction (the reduction is not available for students using the dedicated private College buses above), or pay in termly instalments.

Those students with a household income of £16,000-21,000 are entitled to a 50% reduction on their travel pass by applying to the Exeter College Bursary Fund. Students with a household income below £16,000 qualify for a free pass – either directly from Devon County Council or by applying to the Exeter College Bursary fund. For details of how the discounts are administered, please contact Devon County Council.

For students living in Exeter support is also available for students whose household income is below £21,000 by applying to the Exeter College Bursary Fund. Please contact the Exeter College Welfare Administrator, Jill Clark on 01392 400319.
